 I have also heard the term loose phrasing... and how you play. Can you elaborate...?
...I think one of the things that really, if I put it into
perspective, when I play, I always focus in on voices. Whomever I am
playing for, ever since I have been doing gospel music, it has not
been just an instrumental thing, and it has been about voices. I focus
in on everything that is around me. And it is like my thought process
is that I am focusing on everything that is around me. I am paying attention to everybody to understand what I can do to make it all come together… even if it is a
splash here or just different feels to help the next section of the
song. Producers Sanchez Harley and Derrick Lee, always told me, " You
have to set up every section of the song." If it is just a minuet
lick, a splash of the piano, a riff that the bass player does. A lot
of times I listen for those movements. And it may be not like a big
lick that everybody plays. I catch that stuff whether it be with a
buzz roll or a splash or tom. It kind of breaks the monotony of
straight grooves and adds color to it.
